Did you try using xev and pushing some of the Hotkeys? I did that on my external keyboard and they turned out as SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+R or something like that. I assigned the keycombination I got from xev to the functions I wanted in OS settings. Probably nothing new to you... I guess you meant they didn't work instanly. I comment a lot on this blog.
